I could travel the cosmos, but I’d choke on the stars.

Shay Barlage on Her 18th Birthday

On my 18th birthday, it was like every other day
in my mind I have no time for rest or play.
I’m bound by machines and medications that have left me blind,
blind to the fact that I’m still alive.

They said I’d never make it this far,
or be able to drive my first car.
They said I’d never live to be the age of 18,
but look at me, I’m standing tall and pristine.

I’m an angel with beautiful blonde hair,
an angelic butterfly, with my beauty to spare.

I’ve fallen down, but I’ve picked myself up
I have forever to live,
though sometimes it sucks.

I wake up and think of one thing
every morning it seems my life is the same.
But I won’t let this get me down,
I’m going to live my life and wear a lovely diamond encrusted crown.

Because I’m a lovely princess and will remain frozen in time
for I have the rest of my life to shine.

I wrote this poem for my wonderful cousin Shay Barlage. I never got a chance to read it to her. She passed away February 4, 2011 at the age of 18. She had cystic fibrosis. I love you Shay, and I miss you.
